NÃO CHORE PELA CASA DA AVÓ
DON’T CRY FOR GRANDMA’S HOUSE
“Life will be better for us in Sweden they say for the second time in their lives as they step onto the airplane, full of old promises. But this time they leave their Portugueseness behind. This time my grandmother won’t squat and cackle in the supermarket trying to make herself understood. This time they double-lock the doors, look at their white walls and eat their Findus köttbullar.”
Leah and Amanda Soeiro Nentis are sisters who often work together on projects. One sister is the visual artist and the other the literary artist. Together they put together an art book about their grandparents’ journey of immigration to and from Sweden first in the 1960s and then again in old age in the 2020s. Through archival pictures, photography and poetry the book deals with memory, immigration, notions of home and displacement.
